If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
"The Tonight Show" busted out 5-Second Summaries for guest Andy Samberg, who wowed Fallon and the crowd with his self-proclaimed "encyclopedic" knowledge that helped him sum up film plots -- without using actors' names or titles -- in only five seconds. Fallon upped the stakes by dropping the time limit from five to three to one second, but both men proved freakishly talented at guessing the correct answer based on minimal hints. (Samberg's immediate recognition of Fallon's terrible Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger impressions, which helped him guess "The Expendables," was particularly impressive.)
The "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star shared an anecdote about Mark Zuckerberg personally setting up Samberg's Facebook profile -- and how the social media founder is his only friend. Samberg explained that he didn't want the account, but Zuckerberg -- who's a friend, thanks to an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" alongside Samberg -- insisted that he have one, and even walked him through technical support when the actor started getting unwanted friend requests.
Samberg also talked about his collaboration with west coast chain Umami Burger, which named a burger after him for a charity fundraiser. The actor joked that it only really worked because his last name already sounds like "burger," leading Fallon to wonder which other celebs or public figures could have their own burgers -- like Heisenberg from "Breaking Bad" hawking a sandwich filled with meth.
Patrick Dempsey stopped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and chatted with host Jimmy Kimmel about all the crazy things his character has been through on "Grey's Anatomy," which is starting its 11th season this week. Kimmel marveled as he listed off that Dempsey's Derek Shepherd had been shot, rescued his girlfriend from a ferry accident, was in a plane crash, and used the money from the plane crash settlement to buy the hospital at which he works. Despite all that drama, Dempsey said he was "very thankful" to still be on the popular show.
Kimmel also asked the actor if he was aware that a woman on Tumblr makes knitted versions of Dempsey based on photographs, then showed Dempsey a few (creepy or cute, depending on your proclivities) examples. After that weirdness, Dempsey also discussed his love of racing, and joked with Kimmel about how his sponsor, Beautyrest mattresses, is an odd pairing with race cars.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan chatted with "The Late Show" host David Letterman about their shared Indiana origins, and Gaffigan recounted a hilarious/horrifying story about his last visit home. While at the local mall, Gaffigan spotted an elderly man drinking a cup of KFC gravy, leading the comedian to wonder what would lead someone to turn the topping into a beverage. "I would just love to be at the doctor with him," Gaffigan said gleefully, wondering how bad the gentleman's cholesterol must be.
Gaffigan also discussed why much of his comedy revolves around food -- "I like eating, and I don't like feeling emotions," he explained -- and riffed on his hatred of seafood. Lobsters are "bugs," he told Letterman, while clams and oysters are "snots on rocks." The comedian also discussed a recent embarrassing encounter he had with the TSA, when he was selected for a random baggage screening while carrying a leftover case of a dozen doughnuts. They were a gift from a fan, Gaffigan said, but that didn't stop him from feeling shame over smuggling so many of them into his bag.
Kelly Ripa also stopped by "Letterman," and discussed a myriad of topics, including the giant size of the new iPhone 6. Ripa explained that she got the larger model because her "Live" co-host Michael Strahan was making fun of her small hands, and she wanted to prove him wrong. Instead, Ripa glumly admitted that Strahan was right. The talk show hostess also discussed the terror that is her daughter, and how the girl's attitude was so horrible that she forced the babysitter to quit.
