20 Random 'Friends' Facts Every Fan Should Know

Friends Television Stills Television

So you call yourself a "Friends" fan, eh? You've seen every episode, know all the lyrics to that darn theme song, and consider classic lines ("could I BE wearing anymore clothes?") part of your everyday vocabulary.

"Friends" premiered 20 years ago today on September 22, 1994, and we thought we would honor that big anniversary by putting together 20 little-known facts about the iconic series. Want to see if you're the master of "Friends" trivia? Look no further:

1. Original titles considered for the show included Six of One, Friends Like Us, Insomnia Cafe, and Across the Hall.

2. The apartment numbers got switched as the series went on. Monica and Rachel's original apartment number was 5, but was later changed to 20 because 5 was too small a number for such a high floor. Joey and Chandler's was switched from 4 to 19.

3. John Favreau and Jon Cryer were up for the role of Chandler. As you may remember, Jon Favreau played Monica's boyfriend Pete in Season 3.

4. Hank Azaria auditioned for the role of Joey twice and desperately wanted the job. He ended up with the recurring role of Phoebe's scientist love interest, David.

5. Kathy Griffin and Jane Lynch were up for the role of Phoebe.

6. Ellen Degeneres was offered it and turned it down.

7. Elizabeth Berkley auditioned for the role of Rachel.

8. Leah Remini auditioned for the role of Monica. She did end up appearing in the Season 1 episode, "The One With the Birth."

9. Courteney Cox was offered the role of Rachel.

10. Joey's big white dog statue actually belonged to Jennifer Aniston.

11. Ross Geller was 29 for three years -- he states this age in Seasons 3, 4, and 5.

12. In the Season 6 premiere episode, "The One After Vegas," all the actors had Arquette hyphenated on their last names as a nod to Courteney Cox's recent marriage to David Arquette.

13. Courteney Cox is the only actor out of the six leads who was not nominated for an individual Emmy.

14. Joey's Agent Estelle is played by actress June Gable. Gable appeared in Season 1 playing a different character -- a nurse -- in "The One With the Birth."

15. It was originally planned to have Monica and Joey as a couple on the show.

16. Matthew Perry is the youngest cast member. He was 25 when the show began. Lisa Kudrow is the oldest. She was 31 when the show began.

17. In the pilot, Rachel leaves her fiancé at the altar and refers to him as Barry Finkel. In later episodes the character is called Barry Farber.

18. Lisa Kudrow was afraid of the duck of the chick and the duck.

19. The original opening theme for the show was R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People."
