Dan Aykroyd Has Plans For a Massive 'Ghostbusters' Universe

GHOSTBUSTERSWatch out, Marvel. Take heed, Lucasfilm. Be afraid, DC Comics. There may be a major new franchise player in town - "Ghostbusters."

Sure, it's been three decades since the original film came out, but star Dan Aykroyd believes the franchise has what it takes to compete with the likes of "Star Wars" and the Marvel-verse. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Aykroyd said the "Ghostbusters" creative team has a 10-year vision, starting with "Ghostbusters 3" which begins filming next spring.

"It's beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show," he said. "I'm thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and 'Star Wars' mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?"

(The answer: A LOT.)

And though he's keen on the idea of an all-female "Ghostbusters" movie, Aykroyd thinks they don't have to stop there. They could explore "the whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school."

Prepare for The Slime-ening.
