1. "Suddenly Susan" (1999)
Kathy Griffin played the (naturally) acerbic best friend of Brooke Shields in this long-running sitcom, and Rivers had a recurring guest role as her onscreen mom. Check out the clip below, and then read Griffin's tribute to her friend and idol.
2. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2002)
This appearance was a meta moment, showing Rivers doing her red carpet thing to comedian Richard Lewis, a regular fixture on Larry David's anxiety-fest of a show. The two were old pals in real life from the stand-up circuit. Rivers gets some real zings in during this short clip, like "When E.T. called, did you pick up the phone?" So good.
3. "Nip/Tuck" (2004)
Rivers never made a fuss about discussing her own forays into plastic surgery, so her cameo on this crazy Ryan Murphy show is pretty tongue-in-cheek. She appears in the second season finale as herself, with a request that she refers to as "the mother of all plastic surgeries." Whatever could she be referring to?!
4. "The Simpsons" (2011)
Rivers guest-starred as Annie, Krusty's first agent and producer, on the episode "The Ten-Per-Cent Solution." Annie's behavior as a producer on Krusty's show angers network execs so much that they give Krusty an ultimatum to fire her or hit the road. He chooses the latter. This episode, which aired in 2011, parallels Rivers' own experience on "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers," in 1987. Executives told her to fire her husband and exec producer Edgar Rosenberg, and instead she chose to quit. Roseberg committed suicide three months later.
5. "Louie" (2014)
Who better to give Louis C.K. some real talk about the life of a working comedian than a tireless performer like Joan? "You do it, and you do it because we love it more than anything else... You want a real job honey, there are a million things you can do. But what we do is not a job. It sounds so stupid. What we do is a calling, my dear. We make people happy." Then things get scandalous in a way that only Louis C.K. and Joan Rivers could pull off. You gotta check this out.
