Julia Roberts Tapped For 'Secret In Their Eyes' Remake

If you haven't seen "The Secret in Their Eyes," the Argentine crime thriller that ended up winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Feature (something of an upset, if we recall correctly), please stop reading this silly post and go watch it. In 129 minutes you can return to this post (it'll still be here), but you will be absolutely woozy drunk in love with the power of cinema and the propulsive nature of Juan Jose Campanella's assured storytelling.

All that said: the American remake seems to have been in the works for forever, but it's finally found a super-A-list star in one miss Julia Roberts.

The announcement was made at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie is being shopped (it's being fully financed by independent production unit IM Global), according to the Hollywood Reporter. The report also suggests that the production is going to bend over backwards for the recent Emmy-winning star. The movie was originally supposed to shoot in Boston next month but the production is relocating to Los Angeles for Roberts. Additionally, the role was originally written for a male actor but writer/director Billy Ray ("Breach," "Shattered Glass") re-wrote the character for Roberts after she initially expressed interest in the project.

In the remake, the retired attorney from the original (now played by the always-wonderful Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a former MI-5 agent who returns to Los Angeles (formerly Boston) and starts investigating an old case involving the rape and murder of a former partner's daughter. Roberts will play the former partner. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars. It's going to be very, very good, we think.
