Marvel Moves Ahead With 'Doctor Strange'

Doctor Strange

Marvel's march to (movie) world domination continues. A new report claims that the comic book company is preparing to make a "Doctor Strange" movie.

According to ScreenDaily, Marvel is negotiating for space at England's famed Pinewood Studios, with production to start this fall and filming to begin next May. And if the pieces are all in place in time, they hope to hit a July 2016 release date.

The project has a director (Scott Derrickson, "Sinister") and a writer (Jon Spaihts, "Prometheus"), but no lead actor yet. Joaquin Phoenix was rumored for the role, though other names - Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto - have been tossed about the rumor mill, as well.

Doctor Strange is a neurosurgeon who becomes the Supreme Sorcerer - we've got a more detailed rundown on the character here.

Marvel is clearly not messing around with its production line. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man" arrive next year (as does "Fantastic Four," but that's a Fox joint, not Disney); "Captain America 3" and "Doctor Strange" follow in 2016 (along with "X-Men: Apocalypse); and "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" and two others in 2017.

This is Marvel's world; we're just going to movies in it.
