Sorry, Dallas Fans: Matthew McConaughey Isn't in 'Magic Mike XXL'

Paramount Studios Presentation - Comic-Con International 2014

Despite earlier reports indicating that the entire "Magic Mike" cast would return for the sequel, "Magic Mike XXL," director Greg Jacobs has some sad news: Matthew McConaughey will not be reprising his role in the follow-up.

In an interview with The Playlist, Jacobs revealed that the Oscar-winning actor's character, Dallas, would not appear in the flick. TheWrap confirmed that McConaughey was simply too busy to take part in "XXL," with his spokesman citing his commitment to the Gus Van Sant drama "Sea of Trees" as causing a conflict in his schedule.

Jacobs told The Playlist that other familiar faces would be back, though, including titular star Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, and Joe Manganiello. But the director wouldn't say much more about the cast or the plot of the film, other than that it was "very different" from its predecessor.

The Playlist writes:

"What am I allowed to say?" he said with a pause. "It's road trip movie and put it this way, it's different enough that once you see it you'll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice."

Jacobs says new cast members will join the fold, too, but because those deals aren't closed he wasn't at liberty to say who.

According to TheWrap's report, Tatum told the site during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival that "one key cast member had pulled out [of 'XXL'], and the departure was causing a delay in production." We'll see if McConaughey's absence affects the film's release date.

"Magic Mike XXL" is slated to hit theaters on July 1, 2105.
