Tom Hiddleston Is Shipping Off to 'Skull Island' With Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts

Laurence Olivier Awards - Red Carpet Arrivals

After announcing it was moving forward with an origin story of sorts about King Kong's mystical home, "Skull Island," Legendary Pictures announced Tuesday that it had found the film's lead: Tom Hiddleston.

Yes, Loki himself will be shipping off to the titular mystical location, and what's more, the film just landed a director, too. According to the studio's official press release, Jordan Vogt-Roberts will helm the flick. Though there's no official plot synopsis yet, the Legendary release teased the following:

Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world.

Hiddleston's cinematic achievements are well-know to audiences already (see the above "Avengers" and "Thor" character), but Vogt-Roberts is a bit of a surprise pick to lead the high-profile project. He recently directed Sundance hit "The Kings of Summer" and the comedy documentary "Nick Offerman: American Ham," and he's also directed several episodes of new FX series "You're the Worst" (including the show's pilot).

Now, Vogt-Roberts faces his biggest filmmaking challenge to date, though he'll have plenty of time to prepare, since the film also has a new release date: "Skull Island" will hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
