Stephen Colbert Nerds Out Over the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailer (VIDEO)

Like millions of other "Star Wars" fans, Stephen Colbert watched the new trailer for "The Force Awakens" that debuted over Thanksgiving weekend. But unlike other fans, Colbert claimed that he's more of an expert than anyone on the subject of "Star Wars," and broke down his knowledge in a hilarious bit in which he explained the science behind the controversial new lightsaber featured in the teaser.

During a "Colbert Report" segment Monday night, the comedian could barely contain his excitement over the first glimpse of the J.J. Abrams flick, which showcased "a major conflict, once again, in a troubled desert region" and "R2-D2's head playing soccer." But the best part of the trailer, according to Colbert, was the three-pronged lightsaber, a new addition to the "Star Wars" canon that has divided fanboys and -girls.

Colbert landed on the "awesome" side of that debate, explaining that he's actually "the original 'Star Wars' fan" because he saw the movie at an advance screening in 1977 -- he won a radio contest giving out tickets -- thus making him a fan "two weeks longer than any of you." And as such, he said, his opinion should trump that of the "stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herders" trashing the design on the internet.

Check out the clip -- including Colbert's expert explanation for why the new lightsaber design actually makes perfect sense -- below, and just try to argue with his logic.
