Cineplex Postpones 'The Interview' Screenings

Screenings of "The Interview" in Cineplex theatres have been postponed after hackers threatened to unleash 9/11-style attacks on cinemas that show the film.

"Cineplex takes seriously its commitment to the freedom of artistic expression, but we want to reassure our guests and staff that their safety and security is our number one priority," said a statement attributed to Pat Marshall, vice-president of communications and investor relations for Cineplex Entertainment on Wednesday.

Sony Pictures Entertainment, the studio that produced "The Interview," has been targeted by a series of hacks as the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy about assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has approached its Christmas release date.

Hackers, who call themselves the Guardians of Peace, have released a number of internal documents that have revealed racial comments about U.S. President Barack Obama by producer Scott Rudin in an email exchange with chair Amy Pascal, as well as how the studio lost the Steve Jobs movie.

But the hacks took a disturbing turn recently when a message emerged threatening any theatres that showed "The Interview," Variety reported.

Here's the message in full:

"We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places "The Interview" be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.

Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.

The world will be full of fear.

Remember the 11th of September 2001.

We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.

(If your house is nearby, you'd better leave.)

Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

All the world will denounce the SONY."

North Korea denies involvement in the hacks, Variety said.

Global News said listings for "The Interview" do not appear on the sites for either Cineplex or Rainbow Cinemas, which operates theatres in Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Both Rogen and Franco have also cancelled all media appearances associated with the film, E! reported.
