10 Great TV Shows You Probably Missed in 2014

2014's fall TV line-up delivered some seriously stunning performances, not to mention a few truly incredible new shows -- but the only problem? There was such an abundance of critically acclaimed television that our DVRs could barely keep up. If you missed out on more quality viewing than is healthy, don't sweat it. Moviefone's rounded up a list of hits that you may have missed in 2014 (too busy binging "Gilmore Girls" on Netflix, probably), which means you officially have a plan for winter break!



"The Affair"



If the multiple Golden Globe nominations aren't enough to inspire you to watch "The Affair," you might be interested to know that it stars none other than Joshua Jackson, aka Pacey from "Dawson's Creek." "The Affair" -- which follows the romantic dalliances of a married man and woman in Montauk -- is one part mysterious and one million parts evocative, but the show is worth watching for the brilliant acting alone. Ruth Wilson and Dominic West both nail their respective roles, and their performances are certainly worthy of a Showtime subscription.

"The Leftovers"

Damon Lindelof's much-buzzed about HBO show ended up being somewhat of a sleeper, with many fans giving up a few episodes in. But once you get past the disappointing fact that the central mystery in the show may never be unraveled, you can enjoy somber-yet-extremely sound performances and fascinating small town dynamics as the citizens of Mapleton grapple with the fact that 2% of the world's population disappears in an rapture-like event called the Sudden Departure. Intrigued? Thought so!

"Jane The Virgin"

"Jane the Virgin" might be a CW show about a virginal high school student who accidentally gets artificially inseminated (just go with it), but it's definitely a lesson in not judging a book -- or in this case a TV series -- by its cover. Not only does Gina Rodriguez deliver a breathtaking (not to mention Golden Globe worthy), performance as Jane, the show manages to be heartfelt, hilarious and poignant all at the same time. And it airs on the same night as "Hart of Dixie." Who knew?

"Outlander"

Starz' bodice ripper about a time traveling nurse who finds herself in 18th century Scotland isn't just for romance fan-girls. "Outlander" is a joy to watch, with stunning scenery, feminist undertones, and way more hunky men in kilts than any other show on television. There's plenty of time to catch up on the series before Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser come back for another season of heaving bosoms, so do yourselves a favor and get lost in "Outlander's" dreamy world of stunning moors and even more stunning drama.

"The Knick"

Steven Soderbergh's "The Knick" isn't for the faint of heart (or for people who faint at the site of blood), but the show definitely delivers -- once you get past its admittedly slow start. Clive Owen kills it as Dr. John Thackery, the head surgeon of Knickerbocker hospital who performs innovative (and sometimes outlandish) surgeries while dealing with an opium addiction. Of course the show is a must-see for fans of hospital drama, but it's also provides viewers with interesting take on race relations in the early 1900s. Smart, stylish, and don't even get us started on the killer soundtrack.

"You're The Worst"

Any romantic comedy fans reading this list? Stop everything you're doing and catch up on "You're The Worst" immediately. Definitely not your average rom-com, this FX show is about two somewhat cynical sweethearts who attempt to date despite their slightly unlikeable character flaws. The writing is funny, sarcastic, and will definitely appeal to people who are looking for something a little more sardonic than "Selfie" (RIP) for their romance fix.

"Transparent"

Arguably the best show on this list (if not the best new show of 2014), Amazon's fantastic scripted series about a transgendered woman and her family is a must-watch. The show completely makes over the "family drama" genre, delivering 10 wonderfully written and perfectly acted episodes that hit all notes and then some. It's no wonder that Jeffrey Tambor received a nomination for his work playing Maura! Speaking of, be sure to watch the whole series before the Golden Globes in January -- it'll make Tambor's potential win that much more exciting.

"Penny Dreadful"

If you're a fan of "American Horror Story," "True Blood," or any show with a supernatural spin, then "Penny Dreadful" should be on your watch-list. Not only does Eva Green shine bright like a heroic diamond as Vanessa Ives, the show is just plain fun. Yes, the acting is decent, the costumes are to die for, and the plot is campy in all the right ways, but more than anything this is a series where the viewer gets to sit back, relax, and have nightmares about being chased around London by Frankenstein.

"Broad City"



"Broad City" is sort of like "Two Broke Girls" only completely hilarious, flawless and basically perfect in every way. Which makes sense, considering it's produced by Amy Poehler. The Comedy Central show about two ladies living in New York City packs a seriously funny punch, and is in many ways a more realistic portrayal of millennial life in the big city than HBO's "Girls." Do yourself a favor and watch it before the next season premiers this January.

"Orphan Black"

"Orphan Black" is a great show for sci-fi enthusiasts, but it's also a solid binge-watching option for people who are fans of brilliant, dynamic acting, which lead actress Tatiana Maslany pulls of in spades while playing several carefully fleshed out characters (all who happen to be clones of each other). It's a rare thing for a show to appeal to so many target viewers at once (sci-fi nerds and drama fans unite!), but "Orphan Black's" never been one to follow rules.
