With more critics' groups announcing their choices for best films of the year, the Oscar race is starting to take clear shape.
"Birdman" and "Boyhood" continue to surge ahead as frontrunners. They received, respectively, 13 and eight nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics Association's Critics' Choice Movie Awards - including one for best picture.
"Birdman" also topped the nominees for the London Critics' Circle Film Awards, with stars Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone also getting recognition. Meanwhile, "Boyhood" triumphed with the Toronto Film Critics, earning best picture, best director for Richard Linklater, and best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The Critics' Choice Movie Awards has become one of the more telling of the Oscar precursors. As Gold Derby notes, they have predicted 12 of the last 19 Oscar best picture winners. Last year, eight of the nine Critics' Choice picture nominees went on to reap Academy Award nominations.
