There's been talk of a big-screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" for years, but it seems that things are finally kicking into gear. David S. Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are working on a script, with JGL set to direct and star, but it seems that the prolific author has his own suggestions about who should play Morpheus.
Gaiman told RadioTimes.com, "It's a funny thing with Morpheus. Again, it's that thing where you look around and think, 'Yes, this person would be a fantastic person', and then time passes. There was a time Johnny Depp would've been a great Morpheus, but now he's too old and it's fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict [Cumberbatch] was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, 'Wow, that's incredibly Morpheus.' And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up."
Of course, Cumberbatch has jumped on the Marvel train for the lead in "Doctor Strange," so he's out of the running. On the other hand, anyone who saw Tom Hiddleston as an eternally mopey vampire in "Only Lovers Left Alive" or even Loki in "Thor" knows he's the perfect man for the job, and it seems that Gaiman agrees. "Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I'm concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off."
In any case, Gordon-Levitt and Goyer are scribbling away on their script, and Gaiman expects to see a treatment by Christmas. Goyer has tons of experience penning comic book adaptations, with "Blade," the "Dark Knight" trilogy, and "Man of Steel" under his belt, among others. (The less said about "The Crow: City of Angels," the better.) Still, "Sandman" has legions of diehard fans, and it's sort of Gaiman's baby. Is it in good hands?
"I'm nervous, I'm on tenterhooks. But do I have good feelings? Yeah, I do," Gaiman said. And that's good enough for us.
