Justin Lin to Direct 'Star Trek 3,' Which Now Has a Release Date

Premiere Of Universal Pictures'

After some behind-the-scenes shuffling, Paramount has announced the release date for "Star Trek 3," which also has a new, big-name director attached.

The third installment in the rebooted franchise is set to hit theaters on July 8, 2016, marking the 50th anniversary of the debut of the original "Star Trek" TV series. And if that occasion weren't big enough, the flick is set to be helmed by Justin Lin, who made a name for himself directing several blockbuster installments of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, and who's currently helming episodes of the second season of smash HBO series "True Detective."

Lin stepped in after Robert Orci, who wrote the first two "Trek" flicks, bowed out of the project. Orci was set to take over for departing director J.J. Abrams, who left the series focus on another big sci-fi project: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Looks like Lin -- who's also attached to helm a "Bourne" franchise spinoff starring Jeremy Renner -- has a busy couple years ahead of him.
