George Clooney Will Star in and Direct 'Catch 22' Series

Day Three: The IMDb Studio Hosted By The Visa Infinite Lounge At The 2017 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)At long last, George Clooney is ready to do another series, albeit a limited one.

After years of concentrating on movies, the actor is switching things up. He has signed on to both star in and direct a "Catch-22" adaptation, Deadline reports. The project, which is based on Joseph Heller's 1961 novel of the same name, is co-written by Luke Davies and David Michôd.

The story takes place during World War II and centers on Captain John Yossarian, an airman stationed near Italy. He is in a tough situation because he hates embarking on dangerous combat missions but can't be relieved from duty because of the frustrating Catch-22 rule. Clooney will reportedly play Colonel Cathcart, a commanding officer with whom Yossarian is at odds.

The actor's last major TV role was "ER," which he starred in from 1994 to 1999 before later returning to make a guest appearances. The six-part "Catch-22" is a much smaller time commitment, but it will be fun to see Clooney back on the small screen. So far, it has not been revealed when or how the Paramount TV and Anonymous Content project will air once it is ready.

"Catch-22" filming could begin as soon as early 2018.
