AFI Reveals Top 10 Movies of 2013

The American Film Institute has named its top 10 films of 2013, recognizing movies that have already received plenty of awards season love -- and foreshadowing a potential slate of Best Picture Oscar contenders.

The 10 movies cited by AFI were:

"12 Years a Slave"

"American Hustle"

"Captain Phillips"

"Fruitvale Station"

"Gravity"

"Her"

"Inside Llewyn Davis"

"Nebraska"

"Saving Mr. Banks"

"The Wolf of Wall Street"

The AFI awards celebrate films and television shows "which best advance the art of the moving image, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America's art form, inspire audiences and artists alike and/or make a mark on American society." A list of winning TV series can be found here.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that films like "Lee Daniels' The Butler," "Dallas Buyers Club," "August: Osage County," and "Blue Jasmine" are seemingly glaring omissions from AFI's list, and their exclusion in this race could indicate that they may not receive Best Picture nominations when it comes time for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to vote. According to THR, eight of the nine eventual 2012 Best Picture nominees were recognized by AFI.
