'Office Space' Is Responsible for the Death of TGI Fridays' Flair, Says Mike Judge

In the cult classic workplace comedy "Office Space," Jennifer Aniston's character works at a chain restaurant that's a not-so-subtle parody of TGI Fridays, where servers are forced to wear colorful buttons dubbed "pieces of flair," mimicking the then-very real Fridays practice. Now, writer-director Mike Judge has revealed that Fridays received so much flack over their portrayal in the flick that they did away with the button practice altogether.



In an interview with Deadline, Judge discussed the impact that "Office Space" has had on the culture, pop and otherwise, since its unremarkable debut back in 1999. What was once considered a studio flop became a hit on home video and DVD, and ultimately a phenomenon that's still referenced reverently today.



That impact made its way all the way into the corporate structure at Fridays, apparently, as Judge explained to Deadline.



"About four years after 'Office Space' came out, TGI Fridays got rid of all that [button] flair, because people would come in and make cracks about it," the director said. "One of my ADs asked once at the restaurant why their flair was missing and they said they removed it because of that movie 'Office Space.' So, maybe I made the world a better place."



We think it's pretty hilarious that Fridays was so threatened by some teasing inspired by Judge's movie that they altered a company policy, though even they will probably admit that the change is for the better. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but flair will always be a bit tacky.
