While Lupita Nyong'o was last night's definitive fashion icon, with her flowing, low-cut powder-blue gown that seemed to be a part of her skin, there was another star in blue that received almost as much attention, but not for the best reasons. We are, of course, referring to Liza Minnelli, whose mere presence seemed to be a mystery to almost everyone in attendance (and most of the people watching at home). So why was Liza Minnelli there?
Well, ostensibly, Minnelli, who had a shock of blue in her hair to accentuate the electric blue pants suit that she wore, was there to commemorate her mother Judy Garland's involvement in "Wizard of Oz." (Pink, who also wore a dress with a plunging neckline, performed a song from the film.) Liza was accompanied to the Oscars by her brother, Joey Luft, and sister Lorna Luft (Garland's father is director Vincent Minnelli, while Lorna and Joey's father was producer Sidney Luft).
But the three of them didn't appear on stage and Liza didn't sing, so it ended up being that Minnelli was mostly there to be ridiculed by Ellen in the opening monologue (who suggested that she was a male Liza Minelli impersonator) and, later, to become a part of Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie. For Oscar history buffs, Minnelli won an Oscar for "Cabaret" three years after Garland died of an accidental drug overdose.
You'd think if the Academy had gone through the trouble of getting Minnelli and her siblings together, who haven't always been on the best of terms, they'd have had her, you know, do something. Anyone that saw the recent Netflix revival of "Arrested Development" can attest to the fact that Minnelli is still as hilarious and talented as she's ever been. That outfit though...
