This summer is going be full of superheroes, silly comedians, and whatever the hell Godzilla is (is he a dinosaur or what?) Then, out in a different galaxy, there's "Jupiter Ascending." It's the new film from the Wachowskis, who created "The Matrix" (and its sequels) and "Speed Racer" and most recently co-directed "Cloud Atlas," and it looks absolutely bonkers. For further evidence of its commitment to trippiness, please watch the new trailer below.
Most of the trailer reiterates things that were seen in the teaser -- Mila Kunis is a lowly Earth woman who is intercepted by a half-wolf alien (Channing Tatum) and whisked away to the farthest reaches of the universe, bound for really exciting, potentially revolutionary things. (You can tell she is special because bees swarm around here. Bees!)
The movie looks absolutely insane, in the best possible way. It could be a tricky tonal balance because the Wachowkis are seemingly attempting epic grandeur and total goofiness, but if they pull it off it could be something like a space-set "Princess Bride." The Wachowkskis' penchant for extraordinary visuals appears to have remained intact, as well as their thematic concerns over fate, destiny, and the corporatization of the humanity. Also there are a lot of space ships and at least one goblin. So there's that.
"Jupiter Ascending," which also features Sean Bean as some kind of gruff mentor, Eddie Redmayne as the fop king of the universe, and "Cloud Atlas" alums Doona Bae (yes!) and James D'Arcy, will be out on July 18.
