Scottish actress Karen Gillan may be relatively unknown in the U.S. (unless you're a big "Doctor Who" fan), but that's about to change. Gillan has two high-profile projects slated to come out soon: horror flick "Oculus," which hits theaters April 11, and this little Marvel movie you may have heard of, "Guardians of the Galaxy," which debuts August 1.
In promotion of those two projects, Gillan participated in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit Tuesday. The actress revealed some behind-the-scenes details of her prep for both "Oculus" and "Guardians," discussed her work on "Doctor Who," and endeared herself to fanboys by showing off a sassy sense of humor.
Some highlights from Gillan's AMA:
American accents are familiar -- but tricky.
Gillan said that she grew up listening to American accents because U.S. entertainment is omnipresent in Great Britain, adding that she "even played Barbies in an American accent." As for how she prepared for her role as an American in "Oculus" -- which included a 13-minute monologue -- Gillan admitted that mastering and maintaining the accent took a lot of work. "It was the hardest thing I ever had to learn," she wrote. "It took me 2 months. If you think of the memory like a muscle, I pulled it."
Don't question her favorite dinosaur.
When asked for her favorite dinosaur, Gillan answered with the pterodactyl. But according to one overzealous Redditor, a pterodactyl is "a pterosaur, not a dinosaur." Gillan was quick to come back with a quip to silence the naysayers. "Talk to Spielberg," she wrote, referencing "Jurassic Park" and winning the hearts of Redditors everywhere.
"Doctor Who" isn't the only cult sci-fi show she loves.
When asked what she'd be most excited to celebrate if she attended Comic-Con as a fan rather than a panelist, Gillan touted a certain series featuring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. "If the X-Files were at comicon now, I would freak out," the actress wrote. "Gillian Anderson is the greatest redhead there ever was. I want to believe."
Shaving her head wasn't a big deal.
Gillan's "Guardians" villain, Nebula, is bald, and the actress shaved her head for the role. Though she admitted that that requirement was all she could think of when she first accepted the part, she said it ended up being a positive experience. "It was scary, but very funny to shave my head," she wrote.
Versatility is important.
The actress revealed that she's inspired by her "Oculus" co-star Katee Sackhoff, who broke out on the TV series "Battlestar Galactica." "She is a sci-fi actress who's gone on to do amazing things," Gillan wrote, adding that she hopes to do the same. "All I care about is producing good work, no matter what genre," she said. "I would love to strike a nice balance between comedy and dramatic acting." Her dream role? Lady Macbeth.
The keys to her heart are simple (fanboys, take note).
One Redditor asked Gillan outright, "What would it take to win your heart?" The actress's reply was short and straightforward. "Cadbury eggs and bad jokes," she wrote.
