Loki Goes Country: Tom Hiddleston Performs Surprise Hank Williams Covers at Music Festival

Laurence Olivier Awards - Red Carpet Arrivals

Tom Hiddleston is preparing to play country music legend Hank Williams in an upcoming biopic, and he tried out his twang on a pair of surprise performances at a music festival this weekend.

Hiddleston popped up to cover the Williams tunes "Move It On Over" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" at the Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan, where he seemingly proved that he has the musical chops -- and country crooning skills -- to take on the role of the iconic singer. Hiddleston's presence at the festival was so under the radar that it took audience members several minutes before they realized who he was, with one surprised concertgoer overheard in video of the event marveling, "It's the guy who plays Loki in 'The Avengers!'"

Only a short snippet of Hiddleston's "Move It On Over" performance is online so far (readers prone to seasickness may want to just listen to the audio instead of watching the shaky camera footage), but it's still pretty cool to hear him try out his Williams impression. Check it out for yourselves below, and see if you think the British Hiddleston has what it takes to play the American music legend.

"I Saw the Light" begins production next month in Louisiana.
