Investigators are still trying to piece together what caused the fiery crash that killed actor Paul Walker and his friend and driver Roger Rodas Saturday, but according to several reports, one theory is that the pair were drag racing with another vehicle.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said authorities were investigating tips that another car was present when Walker and Rodas's Porsche crashed into a light pole and a tree, including the possibility that a vehicle may have swerved in front of the Porsche, causing the crash. Skid marks found at the scene also indicate that a car may have been doing doughnut spins, though it's not known if those marks were left by Walker's vehicle.
Street racing is currently authorities' biggest lead, according to TMZ, with sources telling the site that police are looking for any witnesses or video that can prove another car was present at the time of the crash. TMZ reports that "the area where the crash occurred has a history of being a popular street racing location."
Determining the speed at which the Porsche was traveling is an important piece of the puzzle for investigators. Police have said that "the impact of the crash was so great, a chunk of the car flew several feet into a nearby building, breaking a window."
Meanwhile, another theory floated by TMZ is that the Porsche malfunctioned, possibly due to a steering fluid leak. Sources connected to Always Evolving, the shop co-owned by Walker and Rodas, tell the site "they saw evidence of a fluid burst and subsequent fluid trail before the skid marks at the accident scene," as well as "a noticeable absence of skid marks until just before the point of impact."
Sources added that Rodas "was a world class driver," and while he may have been speeding, he never would have simply lost control of the vehicle.
