If you were one of the many who saw the terrific Richard Linklater studio comedy "School of Rock" and thought that the adventures of a goofy substitute teacher and his innately talented students could continue, well, you're not alone. It was announced today (via Deadline) that Paramount is teaming with Nickelodeon to produce a live-action "School of Rock" TV series that will, once again, center on Dewey Finn and his hard rock-loving pupils.
While it hasn't been decided who will step into the very large shoes of Jack Black to play Finn (this will probably be the most crucial decision the creative team makes), it has been announced that original director Richard Linklater will executive produce the series, alongside the original film's heavy hitter producer Scott Rudin. It looks to combine the same comedy/musical styles of the original film, with Paramount TV president Amy Powell saying (in a prepared statement) that the show will "be an irresistibly fun show for the whole family."
A few years ago there were plans to do a proper sequel to "School of Rock," with original writer Mike White turning in a screenplay to Paramount that apparently wasn't met with much enthusiasm (Linklater was also set to return). It's unclear whether or not the series will maintain any of the elements from that aborted sequel. According to the Deadline report, there is also a Broadway musical version of "School of Rock" being developed byW Andrew Lloyd Webber. Hopefully that will get as far as the sequel.
The 13-episode straight-to-series order will air sometime next year on Nickelodeon. Rock on!
