According to a report on Deadline, part of the top-to-bottom restructuring of the "Spider-Man" franchise includes the development of a female-led "Spider-Man" spinoff, tentatively slated for a 2017 release. While the identity of the heroes or villains that this story will center around, Deadline has learned that Lisa Joy Nolan (who is scripting the new "Westworld" miniseries) is penning the screenplay. Wait - a woman writing a female superhero movie? Yay to that!
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, the hilariously mismatched production duo behind "Amazing Spider-Man," will also produce this spin-off, which Sony theorizes could involve Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestarter or Spider-Woman. It could also just be about the women that populate the "Spider-Man" universe - Aunt May, Mary Jane, etc. There have been tons of great comics that have just played up the teen angst aspect of the character, and we'd welcome such a film to the superhero landscape.
In the grand "Amazing Spider-Man" universe, the untitled female superhero movie will follow Drew Goddard's villains-only "Sinister Six" film, which actually has a release date of November, 2016.
Hopefully this announcement will light the fire under the asses of the big boys - Marvel and DC, the two biggest companies in the superhero-to-film game and two studios that have yet to unleash a female-led superhero movie on the mainstream. Come on boys, time to get cracking!
