The "Veronica Mars" resurgence continues.
After the beloved cult CW series was resurrected as a Kickstarter-funded feature and released into theaters (and on VOD) earlier this year, the tale of a pint-sized detective (played by Kristen Bell) has gone on to gain wide critical reappraisal and inspire a series of actual detective novels co-authored by series creator Rob Thomas. Well, things in the "Veronica Mars" spin-off universe are about to get significantly weirder with an "unauthorized" web series called "Play It Again, Dick."
First off, of course this web series is authorized and largely overseen by Thomas himself. Secondly, it sounds really bizarre. The trailer (courtesy of Entertainment Weekly) begins as a spoof of the trailer for the final season of HBO's preachy drama "The Newsroom." This seems to be, oddly enough, capturing the tone of this new series, though, because the plot is bananas.
In "Play It Again, Dick," Ryan Hansen, who plays Dick Casablancas on the show (and in the movies), will play himself, trying to get a "Veronica Mars" spin-off off the ground (he'll also play his character). Other characters/actors from the show, including Bell and Jason Dohring, will also pop up for wildly meta-textual adventures. The series will run on CW website CW Seed, consisting of eight episodes that run roughly ten-minutes-long each. They start airing on September 16th, but if you're a Marshmallow, you probably already know that.
