Conspiracy theorists have been claiming for decades that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone when he shot and killed President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Could a mutant have helped?
That question is the subject of a new viral marketing campaign for "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which lays out an alternate history where Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. mutant villain Magneto, was tried and convicted for conspiring with Oswald. A video recounting the events of Kennedy's assassination claims that the government's evidence against Magneto was "circumstantial at best," and that the mutant had no motive for the crime.
The video states that the government believes Magneto "altered the trajectory of Oswald's second bullet, effectively murdering the president," but questions what the so-called "bent bullet" really proves, leading viewers to a website further exploring the origins of human-mutant tensions in the 1960s. "The events of that fateful day in November have been a point of contention between humans and the mutants ever since," the site says.
It's a neat bit of marketing that provides some juicy context for the conflict audiences can expect to see on the big screen, while also adding an air of real-life intrigue. And playing on the public's newly-rekindled interest in JFK conspiracies near the 50th anniversary of his assassination is pretty shrewd, too. It'll be interesting to see what else the film's PR team throws our way in the lead-up to its release.
