Jena Malone on Getting Mad, Sam Claflin Pumping Up for 'Catching Fire'

Jena Malone and Sam Claflin The Hunger Games Catching Fire

As always, there was significant fan hubbub when it came to casting characters in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Victors Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason are two integral characters in the sequel, making their casting a hotly debated decision among fans of the Suzanne Collins series -- especially the flirty Odair, whose casting was as anticipated as Gale and Peeta's were the first time around.

Sam Claflin eventually snagged the role of Finnick, whose weapon of choice is a trident; however, even the toothy "Snow White and the Huntsman" actor was the subject of fan criticism.

"My Twitter [account was] getting a barrage of messages from people that were so offended that I was cast that they were willing to kill themselves," he told the New York Daily News. "It kind of got to the point where I went, 'Oh My God, what am I doing?'" What he did was bulk up at the gym, give up beer, and learn how to throw a trident.

Although Jena Malone wasn't subject to quite the same sort of criticism, she certainly faced some trepidation about taking on the role of tough-as-nails Johanna Mason. Eventually, she did manage to conjure up the needed vim and vigor for the role, noting that she might have "scared" director Francis Lawrence during her audition. She had to channel that same 'tude for one wild scene where she strips down in an elevator with Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson. The look on JLaw's face is worth the price of a ticket alone.
