Darkly comic drama "August: Osage County" tells the story of the Weston family, driven apart over the years only to return to their Oklahoma home for a funeral and a reunion with their overbearing, straight-shooting matriarch, Violet (Meryl Streep).
In this clip, premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, Violet complains to her daughter, Barbara (Julia Roberts), and Barbara's estranged husband, Bill (Ewan McGregor), about the recent hiring of a live-in Native American housekeeper, Johnna (Misty Upham). Violet doesn't see anything wrong with calling Johnna an Indian -- within earshot of the woman, no less -- despite Barbara and Bill's attempts to educate her otherwise.
Violet's stubbornness in this scene -- and self-congratulatory response to that stubbornness -- gives the audience a taste of what to expect from the character throughout the film, an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tracy Letts, who also wrote the screenplay. Get ready for lots of arguing and lots of withering responses from Violet.
Directed by John Wells ("The Company Men"), the sprawling cast also includes Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Sam Shepard, Margot Martindale, Chris Cooper, Dermot Mulroney, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Julianne Nicholson.
"August: Osage County" opens in theaters on Christmas Day.
