Kevin Smith Reveals Man-Walrus Creature From His Movie 'Tusk'

Kevin Smith tusk creature

Kevin Smith always seems to be threatening retirement without ever actually pulling the trigger. Remember his two-part hockey movie? Or what about "Clerks III?" Well, a recent idea that he has apparently followed through on is called "Tusk." The movie was inspired by a Gumtree ad the director read on one of his podcasts. The ad was for a room, with the only condition being that the lodger dress as a walrus for two hours a day. Smith turned this into a more horrific tale of an old sea captain who slowly turns a hostage into a human/walrus hybrid. Yes, this is actually the plot of the movie, from the director of "Zack and Miri Make A Porno."

Yesterday, Smith posted an Instagram photo of a blood-splattered schematic showing the human/walrus creature. It's a pretty wonderful image, but how it will be executed remains to be seen. Along with the photo, Smith's caption read: "'is man, indeed a walrus at heart?' We wrap TUSK this Friday! Will be tough to leave NC as I'm so in love with my Charlotte crew and this wacky flick we're making! #WalrusYes" Well, #WalrusYes just usurped #blessed as my new favorite hash tag.

The movie stars Michael Parks as the crazy sea captain, with Justin Long playing his tortured hostage. The rest of the cast includes Haley Joel Osment and Genesis Rodriguez. From the very beginning of the project, Smith wanted to shoot as quickly and effectively as possible, to meet the self-imposed deadline of debuting the film at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of 2014. We'll see if that piece of the puzzle fits into place.

Smith's last horror outing was "Red State," a deeply disturbing and political thriller that also starred Michael Parks (and similarly debuted at Sundance). Smith's self-distribution model for "Red State" largely overtook any discussion of the actual film, something that Smith hopes to avoid with the more straightforward chills of "Walrus."

We'll know very soon whether or not "Walrus" makes the Sundance final cut. #WalrusMaybe?
