This New 'Oldboy' Hammer Art Is Smashing (EXCLUSIVE)

Even if you've never seen Park Chan-Wook's original "Oldboy," you've probably heard about a sequence that's whispered about in film school dorms and discussed endlessly through online message boards. At this point, it's taken on an almost mythical quality of notoriety, so much so that it's impossible to imagine Spike Lee's new, American remake, starring Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen, without it. Thankfully, it's there. It is... the hammer fight. And, in new art debuting exclusively on Moviefone (below), the hammer takes center stage.

In "Oldboy," Brolin plays an advertising executive who is mysteriously imprisoned in a phantom hotel, unaware of why he has been captured or who is responsible. (He's also kind of a d*ck; when he's just-as-mysteriously released, his list of suspects is a mile long.) As you may expect, it's a long and body-littered path to the truth, and this is particularly true when he grabs a hammer and starts swinging. (If you want to see an unofficial remake of the original scene, watch the strikingly similar homage in the Jude Law sci-fi thriller "Repo Men.")

The original hammer sequence was a virtuoso moment, like a mini-opera smack-dab in the middle of a gore-drenched South Korean thriller. Lee ups the ante technically in a way that we can't quite give away yet -- but it does do the original justice. In the new art, a giant hammer dominates the design, smashing into a small silhouette of Brolin, with glass, blood, and assorted debris flying out from the horizon line. We particularly enjoy the catch phrase "Find the truth and make it hurt."

"Oldboy," which costars Samuel L. Jackson, Sharlto Copley, and Michael Imperioli, opens on November 27. And we'll have tons of fun stuff, including our interview with the enchanting Elizabeth Olsen and a full review of the film, before then.

And if that's still not enough, Moviefone will debut a streaming version of the soundtrack very, very soon. Stay tuned!
