'Mad Max: Fury Road' Release Date Set for May 15, 2015

The long-gestating, troubled "Max Mad" reboot has finally gotten a release date: "Mad Max: Fury Road" will be released on May 15, 2015.

"Fury Road" is an apt title for the film, since the road to getting it made has been anything but smooth. Movies.com has a timeline of the movie's journey, and it's full of stops and starts and even more stops.

The project was first conceived way back in 2003 by the franchise's original director, George Miller, and went from getting a $100 million budget to being re-imagined as a 3D animated film to beginning production in Australia in 2011 then having to relocate to Africa due to heavy flooding interrupting the shoot. So yeah, it's been a wild ride.

But it seems that the production finally has a clear direction, and with a definite release date ahead, it seems like "Fury Road" will finally become a reality. Shooting started back in July 2012, and principal photography wrapped December 2012; reshoots are planned for sometime this month.

In 2012, Miller described the plot thusly:

Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.

We're not sure what Word Burgers are, but then again, there are characters named Toast, Splendid, and Coma-Doof Warrior, so it seems like anything is possible in "Fury Road." Tom Hardy stars as Max, and the large cast also includes Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The original Max, Mel Gibson, is also rumored to have a cameo.

Here's to a weird time in 2015.
