Idris Elba Was Supposed to Play Marvel's Luke Cage at Some Point

Idris Elba might be starring as a godly character in a superhero movie that happens to be the No. 1 movie in the country for the second straight weekend, but in a recent interview with The Huffington Post, he revealed that he was almost the lead in his own superhero franchise.

While discussing "Thor: The Dark World," and his upcoming role as the imprisoned leader of South Africa in "Mandela" (practically a real-life superhero), Elba let slip that at one point they were talking to him about taking over the role of an iconic superhero, in a franchise of his own.

"There was talk of Luke Cage at one time," Elba revealed. "I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character. They were going to do it, but I don't know what happened..." Neither do we, Idris, neither do we.

It was recently announced that Disney and Netflix are embarking on an ambitious, multi-series Marvel continuum, with one of the series set to be based around the supernaturally thick-skinned escaped prisoner. And while Elba is obviously a fan of television, putting in memorable turns for "The Wire," "The Office," and his own "Luther," it's questionable whether or not Disney has the funds or means to get him into their direct-to-your-living-room series.

Only time will tell. But the thought of Elba leading a superhero franchise tickles us endlessly.
