"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" -- finally due out in theaters this Friday -- is based on the novel by Suzanne Collins. But as director Francis Lawrence explains it, the film also takes some inspiration from a different (and surprising) entertainment source.
In an interview with HuffPost Entertainment, Lawrence discussed the series' use of cliffhangers -- especially the coming one between "Mockingjay - Part 1" and "Mockingjay - Part 2" -- and how they infuse the movies with drama while keeping the audience hooked. It's a tactic used to similar effect in the recently-wrapped TV series "Breaking Bad," Lawrence explained, a show with which he became obsessed while shooting "Catching Fire."
Lawrence revealed that he binge-watched episodes of "Breaking Bad" throughout the shoot, and the continually-rising stakes -- and abrupt cliff-hangers -- made him desperate for more.
"[T]he more I watched those episodes, I just became sort of convinced that you can do that kind of stuff with movies, too," he told the site. " ... [T]hey opened bold and they end bold, and I just think that that's fun stuff. ... And hopefully, that's the idea, is make people want more -- make people want to see what's coming next. And look, we're not making it up, you know? The story's already out there; it already exists. The big difference with something like 'Breaking Bad' and this is obviously, you've got to wait a year, as opposed to just waiting a week."
So there you go: Katniss Everdeen is Walter White. Just, you know, without the cancer and the meth.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" hits theaters this Friday, November 22.
