Will Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha continue their quest for love and sex in New York City? Maybe!
"Sex and the City" creator Michael Patrick King tells Entertainment Weekly that there is an idea for a third movie.
"Sarah Jessica [Parker] and I both know what that final chapter is. That doesn't mean it will or should be told, but I do think there's one story left," he says.
"Whether it ever happens is a whole other situation. But there's four girls, and those girls are still in my mind. There are other stories to tell and characters that haven't even been written yet."
And there's the rub: Should "Sex and the City 3" even be made for the big screen?
The first movie was a commercial hit ($152 million in the U.S.) and received decent reviews (49 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). But the sequel plummeted, both at the box office ($95 million) and in buzz (just 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). People aren't exactly clamoring for a third movie.
Yet, "Sex and the City" is still hugely popular in syndication, and a known quantity in a business that loves franchises. If producers can sign on all four stars again -- a big "if," to be sure -- a third movie might be worth it, even if it performs modestly.
"It's all really about the stories, and if you actually think you have something left to say that would make it exciting and worthwhile for the fans' time, that's really the question," King notes.
"Not whether you can get away with it, not whether anybody will buy it, not whether you can make money on it. It's really like, is there enough or more to say that would justify people risking seeing their favorite characters again? And I think there's one chapter left."
As Carrie might write: Is the third time the charm, or could it cause irreparable harm?
