Woman Spends the Night in Jail After Failing to Return 'Monster-in-Law'

Monster in law

Most Americans will admit that back when Blockbuster was still the video store king (and dinosaurs roamed the Earth), they returned a few movies after the due date. But one South Carolina woman failed to return a video for more than eight years -- and got herself locked up because of it.

Kayla Michelle Finley, of Pickens County, South Carolina, spent a night in jail last week after she was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of failure to return a rented video cassette. The 27-year-old was at the Pickens County Sheriff's Office on a different matter when an active warrant for her arrest was discovered.

Finley rented "Monster-in-Law," starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, in 2005, and was supposed to return it after 72 hours, but never did. According to local NBC affiliate WYFF, "when Finley didn't return the movie, the business owner went to a Pickens County magistrate who issued an arrest warrant. ... Finley was sent several certified letters to turn herself in, but never did."

Despite claims that she never received any letters from the video store -- which has since gone out of business -- Finley was formally charged last Friday after spending Thursday night in jail, and released on $2,000 bond. The story has since prompted some backlash, with claims that Finley's arrest is a waste of taxpayer dollars, though one local official told WYFF that Finley's coincidental presence in the Sheriff's Office sealed her fate.

"This is an incident where she walked into the law enforcement center," the official said. "And once we found out that information and we were standing there with her we had no choice no alternative but to serve that warrant."

Finley says she plans to fight the charges. But perhaps what's most egregious about this whole situation is that she's been outed as a fan of such a terrible movie. If you're going to get yourself arrested for keeping a video too long, it should probably be a better one.
