One of the summer movies we're the most excited about is the bold reinterpretation of "Godzilla," courtesy of "Monsters" director Gareth Edwards. The movie has an all-star international cast, which includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe, and that initial teaser trailer, featuring sky divers jumping into a giant fire breathing monster-ravaged wasteland, was pretty thrilling. Now it's got an outstandingly cool new poster to get you even more excited.
Courtesy of the Empire Twitter feed, the new poster features the iconic monster from the back, which keeps the mystery alive but also makes pretty clear that the new design will be paying spirited homage to the original monster. Big Daddy Godzilla is stomping through San Francisco. You can see the Transamerica Pyramid and the skydivers from the original teaser... plus lots of fire and implied destruction.
It's nice to see a reverence to the original "Godzilla" films (love the Japanese character behind the title) and this new interpretation will probably do a lot to erase the memories of the disastrous 1998 version with Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno. At least the San Fran setting means that we won't have an ending where a bunch of baby Godzillas are blown up inside Madison Square Garden.
"Godzilla" opens on May 16th, and will probably blow your mind.
