Oscars 2014: Watch Bette Midler Sings 'The Wind Beneath My Wings' Following 'In Memorium' (VIDEO)

When Bette Midler was announced as one of the performers for the 86th annual Oscars, many wondered just what role she would play during the broadcast. Midler added some emotional heft to the telecast Sunday night with a stirring rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings."

Midler performed the iconic song immediately following the annual In Memoriam segment honoring late actors, directors, writers, and others who contributed to filmmaking, and her performance was directed at those who were lost over the last 12 months. The singer -- who was marking her first time performing on the Oscars stage, despite attending the ceremony numerous times over the years -- was clearly emotional during her rendition of the song, and that emotion crept into the crowd.

The Academy Award nominee (for 1979's "The Rose" and 1991's "For the Boys") broke down in tears when she finished her performance, which earned a standing ovation from the audience at the Dolby Theater. It was a touching tribute to the late stars honored Sunday evening, as well as a great representation of Midler's formidable talent. Here's hoping she'll get to make another Oscars appearance sometime soon.
