The Real Reason Lupita Nyong'o Didn't Want to Pull a Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars

lupita nyong'o jennifer lawrence oscarsJennifer Lawrence probably isn't thrilled that her now-infamous fall at the 2013 Oscars is a cautionary tale, though she can probably forgive her former Best Supporting Actress rival, Lupita Nyong'o, for worrying about repeating that gaffe.

Nyong'o, who graces the July cover of Vogue magazine, revealed in the accompanying interview that in the surreality surrounding the moment she won the statuette earlier this year, one glaring thought shone through.

[S]he remembers that all she could think was "Don't fall on those stairs" because, as she drolly explains, "it's not cute if you follow Jennifer Lawrence-it's not cute if you're the second one!"

Luckily, Nyong'o stayed upright, and delivered a powerful, beautiful speech, encouraging young people to follow their dreams. It's a message that she herself applied, though the "12 Years a Slave" star admitted that it took her many years to realize that her passion was worth pursuing. It seems everything worked out for the actress, who remains humble about her success.

"I had already gotten the [Oscar] nomination, which was truly, truly astounding, and enough," Nyong'o said. "Even in my dreams of being an actor, my dream was not in the celebrity. My dream was in the work that I wanted to do."

So far, her lack of high-profile trips -- and her impressive filmography -- bodes well for keeping that dream alive.
