Norman Reedus Breaks Down Daryl and Beth's Relationship on 'The Walking Dead'

AMC's

Fans of "The Walking Dead" no doubt sensed a bit of sexual tension mounting between Daryl and Beth in the latter half of the show's fourth season, where the pair were stranded alone together, and began to to form an intense bond. But is there really a chance for romance for the pair?

Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl, shared his thoughts with Cinema Blend during an appearance at Comic-Con this weekend, noting that Beth offered Daryl, who had already suffered plenty throughout the series's run, a bit of hope.

"Beth was kind of like this long dark tunnel. She was kind of like this little flame at the end of it," Reedus told the site. "[Daryl] got closer and closer to that flame and thought maybe he could see something and maybe there would be light and it's getting warmer and warmer... and then someone blew it out."

That latter statement is a reference to the pair's sudden separation at the end of season four, a situation that has yet to be resolved on the show. Before their parting, "The Walking Dead" seemed to be pointing viewers towards a potential Daryl and Beth coupling, though Reedus says that even if that were the case, a beaten down Daryl would probably have been oblivious to the romance, especially in the wake of other losses he'd suffered since the dawn of the zombie apocalypse.

"If Daryl has a thing for Beth or whatever, I always saw that as, if he did, he didn't understand those feelings," the actor said. "He might have felt them, but it wasn't a thing. He was sort of uncomfortable with those feelings, but there might be hope somewhere down the line and then it was taken from him, again. Reunited with his brother, taken. Found his family in the prison, taken. Almost got Sophia, taken. It's like over and over and over again. And that happens to all of us."

That's definitely a philosophical take on the character, though certainly important for 'shippers to keep in mind when getting impatient waiting for a seemingly-inevitable kiss between the twosome. And we think it's definitely in keeping with everything we've seen from Daryl on the show so far, so Reedus seems to understand his role quite well.

Viewers anxious to find out what happens to the gang -- romantic or otherwise -- will hopefully get their questions answered when the series returns for its fifth season on AMC in October.
