Here's What You Need to Know About 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1' Trailer

Few things were as "throw your cup on the floor" frustrating as the ending of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Not in a bad way, mind you, but in a "this cliffhanger is so tantalizing that it may do me actual physical harm" way. So it's with a fair amount of anticipation that we greet anything related to follow-up, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," the first of the two-part conclusion to the epic, financially unstoppable "Hunger Games" franchise.



When last we left Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), she had just competed in a "Survivor: All Stars"-style version of the Hunger Games, and the resistance had started in earnest (and already claimed some casualties), with factions being aligned on both sides of the moral (and governmental divide). At the end of the movie, she was resolute and incredibly ticked off, a fighter who was shoved, head first, into the position of a revolutionary. As the first teaser for the new sequel suggests, it's going to be all-out war.



The trailer starts with a shot of a futuristic spaceship, moving away from the glitz and glamour of the capitol and out towards the outer districts, where agrarian societies and foundational industrial buildings sit in the same dusty dirt. We see Philip Seymour Hoffman, thought to be a corrupt game designer but in fact one of the architects of the revolution, chatting with a new character played by Julianne Moore, about Katniss' credentials as a freedom fighter. It's powerful stuff, made even more powerful due to Hoffman's sudden, shocking death, and the images that follow carry with it their own stark importance. We're moving away from the Capitol, with its rococo set design and outrageous costumes, and into the commonwealth, where things are drab and depressing (but still, thanks to director Francis Lawrence, still totally ravishing).



Towards the end of the trailer, we see a crop-circle-style mocking jay logo in a field, and that evil president played by Donald Sutherland making it a degree that anyone associated with said symbol will be shot in the head by a crazy futuristic gun. We don't even see Katniss for much of the trailer, but at the end, like Caesar before her on the planet of the apes, she begrudgingly accepts her position as the leader of the cause. And yes, she plans on kicking ass.
