FX has renewed two series, with both "Louie" and "Fargo" scoring new seasons after recent celebrated runs.
"Louie," created by and starring stand-up comic Louis C.K., will be back for a fifth season following an experimental batch of episodes that netted him three Emmy nominations and heaps of critical praise. The break between seasons four and five will be much shorter than the 19-month hiatus he took after the end of season three, with new episodes expected to premiere sometime in spring 2015.
"'Louie''s fourth season was once again groundbreaking. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking - always thought provoking," FX CEO John Landgraf said in a statement. "The show went to narrative and cinematic places no comedy has gone before and we look forward to seeing what Louis comes up with next."
Meanwhile, freshman miniseries "Fargo" has been greenlit for a second season, and the anthology series promises an all-new group of characters, central mystery, and time period for its sophomore outing. Like fellow FX drama "American Horror Story," each season of the show is meant to be its own contained tale.
Whether "Fargo" will follow in "AHS"'s footsteps and also roll over some cast members from season to season as new characters remains to be seen, but the show's success -- 18 nominations for the 2014 Emmys, and individual nods for stars Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, and Colin Hanks -- suggests that FX may want to re-capture some of that magic and re-secure some of its leads for another round of episodes.
"Fargo" will be back with a 10-episode season at a to-be-determined date. "Louie" will run a seven-episode limited season early next year.
