A new app and website is aiming to turn the world into Simpsons World, and both casual and diehard fans of the series should find something to love about the new service, which promises to make all 552 existing episodes of the long-running animated series available for streaming, among other perks.
During an appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, executives from FXX explained that in addition to the network's plans to air all those episodes -- plus "The Simpsons Movie" -- in order during a mega 24/7 marathon from August 21 through September 1, they would also stream through Simpsons World, an immersive app and website that will offer an easily searchable archive of episodes, clips, and trivia from the series, as well as in-depth episode guides with quotes, behind-the-scenes info, and historical and pop cultural references from each installment. Viewers can curate playlists of their favorite episodes and clips, or those revolving around a certain theme, and can share snippets across multiple social media platforms, in addition to getting personalized recommendations for other clips based on their viewing preferences.
It's a huge undertaking -- 552 is a lot of episodes -- but one that "Simpsons" showrunner Al Jean said was worth it to provide fans such a huge archive. Jean joked that with the arrival of Simpsons World, "there's no reason to do anything else but do this app 24 hours a day," and added that all its amenities would amaze audiences.
"I don't want to over-promise, but I do think this website will provide you with affordable healthcare," Jean said.
The service will be available to pay cable subscribers who receive the FX networks package (including FX, FXX, and FXM), and require authentification, but is otherwise free. It will be available online and as an app on a number of mobile devices, including Apple and Android phones and tablets.
Simpsons World is expected to officially launch sometime this October, with bonus content estimated to roll out through January. Set aside your free time and hoard some Duff's accordingly.
