"24" seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. After resurrecting the show for a ninth season this spring, Fox is also mulling over whether it wants to make season 10 -- and, eventually, a movie.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday, star Kiefer Sutherland and executive producer Jon Cassar discussed their trepidation with bringing back the series, which went off the air in 2010, and whether or not the material would live up to their original creation.
" ... [W]e were really proud of what we did" after the first eight seasons, Sutherland said. "So the idea of opening that up again and potentially damaging that again was really massive."
But the star and Cassar admitted that it was difficult to let go of protagonist Jack Bauer, and were persuaded to try their luck again with the just-wrapped limited ninth season. Of course, they were once again facing a familiar problem: how to say goodbye to Bauer.
"Trying to create the end of our show this season, because we had said this was the last season, was really difficult for us," Sutherland told the crowd. "All of us individually didn't want to let it go; we fought against it, we fought for it."
Fox Networks Group chairman Peter Rice told reporters earlier this month that there was always potential for "24" to return for a 10th season at some point in the future. While Sutherland and Cassar didn't speak to that specifically, they did acknowledge the rumor of a long-gestating "24" movie, which Cassar said was still on the radar.
"We're still talking about the movie," the exec producer said Thursday. "It's still potentially out there."
