Things Look Very Grim in the 'Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' Trailer (VIDEO)

the hobbit the battle of the five armies trailerThe first trailer for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" proves that while Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his friends may have reclaimed the dwarves' homeland from the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch), their epic journey is still not over yet. If anything, the most difficult leg still remains before them.

The clip shows just what sorts of danger Bilbo and his company are up against, as orcs and other deadly creatures converge to destroy them in the titular battle. There's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpse of the evil eye of Sauron, who has sent the orcs to do his bidding.

As usual, director Peter Jackson and his special effects team seem to once again have outdone themselves with stunning visuals, as the trailer offers looks at lush landscapes, scores of soldiers, and curious creatures galore.

"One day I'll remember ... everything that happened -- the good, the bad, those who survived, and those that did not," Bilbo says in the trailer.

It seems audiences are in store for plenty of all of those things in the final installment of the "Hobbit" trilogy.

"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" opens on December 17.
