Grab your eyeliner and whimsical headscarves, because the dread pirate Jack Sparrow will be hitting the high seas in 2017. It seems like just yesterday that Johnny Depp debuted his Keith Richards swagger for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."
Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who co-directed the oceanic adventure "Kon-Tiki" in 2012), will take a crack at directing "Pirates 5," which is tentatively named "Dead Men Tell No Tales." Jeff Nathanson, who also penned "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "Rush Hour 3," and "The Terminal," is working on the script. "Pirates 5" was initially slated for 2015, but "The Lone Ranger" certainly took a bite out of Disney's bottom line. The bad press and even worse reviews of "The Lone Ranger" definitely left a bad taste in movie-goers' mouths, so perhaps it was wise to push off "Pirates" another year.
It's hard to believe that the first "Pirates" was nominated for 5 Oscars, but once we loved the Gore Verbinski blockbusters. Perhaps by 2017, enough time (and Depp roles) will have passed that it will feel fresh again. The franchise's box office earnings decreased over the years, but 2011's "On Stranger Tides" made a whole lotta money overseas -- $804 million, bringing its earnings to $1 billion worldwide - and since franchises are looking more and more towards global box office earnings than simply the US market, well, why the heck not make another "Pirates"?
