Villains Rise In the Dark New Trailer For 'Gotham' (VIDEO)

While "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is set to unite the Dark Knight with the Man of Tomorrow in theaters around the world in 2016, Batman is also coming to television, much sooner, courtesy of Fox's "Gotham," airing this fall. It's a gritty look at the origins of Gotham's most notorious residents, both good and bad, with a young Commissioner Gordon (played by "OC" star Ben McKenzie) taking center stage. If you aren't jazzed yet, this new trailer (courtesy of EW) should do the trick.

This trailer plays up the iconic nature of Gotham and its inhabitants without going crazy on the "Hey! It's a little kid version of the Riddler!" stuff that some of the previous trailer and teasers have relied heavily on. Instead, this takes a more atmospheric approach, establishing the mood and tone of the piece (gritty cop drama with some oversized villains) over the whole comic book connection thing... mostly.

In super ominous text, the trailer notes that, "On September 22nd legends are born, villains will rise, and the battle for Gotham begins." Count us in! McKenzie looks like a great Gordon -- committed and intelligent and even at a young age trying to steel himself against the moral decay of Gotham. And an even more genius bit of casting has come in the form of Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, one of the Gotham Police Department's more corrupt and loud affiliates (the character was most memorably brought to life on the "Batman: The Animated Series" TV show).

Towards the end of the trailer, things get jokey, with Robin Lord Taylor, as a young version of the Penguin, getting bullied by some kids ("Anyone ever told you that you walk like a penguin?"), but thankfully that's mostly the extent of it.

"Gotham" premieres on Fox on September 22nd.
