Crank Up the Kenny Loggins: 'Top Gun 2' Has a New Writer

It's been decades in the making, but "Top Gun 2" may be inching closer to actually happening, with the project currently courting a new screenwriter.



The Hollywood Reporter writes that Justin Marks -- who penned the screenplay for Disney's upcoming adaptation of "The Jungle Book," directed by Jon Favreau -- is hammering out negotiations to rewrite the script to the long-gestating sequel, set to be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer recently switched over his producing loyalties from Disney to Paramount, which is making the follow-up to the 1986 Tom Cruise flick.



The last time the "Top Gun" sequel script got an overhaul was in 2012, when "The Town" scribe Peter Craig took a crack at it. But that iteration faltered, held up in part by the suicide that year of director Tony Scott, who helmed the original and was set to take the reins on the follow-up, too.



It seems that this time, though, Bruckheimer and co. are determined to get "Top Gun 2" flying, and a new script from Marks -- with whom Bruckheimer collaborated on another project for Disney, and who's currently working on a screenplay for "Federal Bureau of Physics" for Warner Bros. -- could be just the thing to do it. Stay tuned.



Until then, we'll just be listening to "Danger Zone" on repeat.
