Weekend Box Office: 'The Lego Movie' Towers Over Competition With $69.1 M

Weekend Box Office Lego Movie

In its debut weekend, "The Lego Movie" assembled an outstanding $69.1 million in North America to easily take the No. 1 spot at the box office. Warner Bros. is already developing a sequel for the animated film that -- with estimates of a $45 million-plus weekend -- handily surpassed expectations and made it the biggest movie of 2014 to date.

Meanwhile, George Clooney's WWII movie "The Monuments Men" opened in second place to a strong $22.7 million. The film was met with relatively poor reviews, but it seems its impressive ensemble cast salvaged the movie's debut weekend.
