Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams Pretty Much Hated Each Other While Filming 'The Notebook'

All those times people have spent feeling like utter failures that their love lives pale in comparison to the onscreen heat in, say, "The Notebook" should rest assured that the co-stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were sparking in an entirely different way at first.

Director Nick Cassavetes ("The Other Woman," "Alpha Dog") dished some details on the former lovers during an interview with VH1 celebrating the 10th anniversary of the tearjerker. As we all know, Gosling and McAdams dated for years after meeting on set, but things weren't all wine and roses from the beginning.

Cassavetes told VH1, "They were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there's 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, 'Nick come here,' and he's doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?' I said, 'What?' He says, 'I can't. I can't do it with her. I'm just not getting anything from this.'"

They took a time-out in another room, where the future happy couple "started screaming and yelling at each other" before getting it together and carrying on. As Gosling told the Guardian in 2007, "We inspired the worst in each other. It was a strange experience, making a love story and not getting along with your co-star in any way." He added, "I don't know what happened... Two years later I saw her in New York and we started getting the idea that maybe we were wrong about each other..."

McAdams later said, "We weren't throwing Ming vases at each other, so it wasn't loathing, but our relationship was not what you saw on the screen. I would say that we were both, well, professional."

Welp, guess that's why we call it acting.
