Billy Crystal to Lead Robin Williams Tribute at Emmy Awards

Premiere Of Magnolia Pictures'

The Emmy Awards will honor the late, great Robin Williams with a special tribute led by his longtime friend and fellow comedian, Billy Crystal.

Emmys producer Don Mischer made the announcement earlier today, telling E! News, "We felt we needed to do something powerful and memorable. Billy seemed like the perfect choice."

Since Williams died on Aug. 11, there has been a tremendous outpouring from his friends, co-stars, and fans. The two-time Emmy winner's tribute will be part of the Aug. 25 broadcast's "In Memoriam" segment, which will feature a performance by Sara Bareilles.

In last year's "In Memoriam," Williams paid tribute himself, to Jonathan Winters.

Crystal and Williams only starred together in one movie, 1997's "Father's Day," but teamed up many times to host (along with Whoopi Goldberg) Comic Relief specials benefitting the homeless. Crystal has been quiet about his friend's death, simply tweeting:

No doubt he'll have much more to say on Aug. 25.
